Cool Cubes

August is a hot and steamy month in Louisiana, and I am always looking for new ways to keep cool.  Butler is very good about icing down my water for me after my morning walks, but what if I need a mid-day cool down?

Well, I finally found a way to combine a tasty snack with a cool down method- introducing Cool Cubes.  This recipe is so simple, it really shouldn’t even be considered a recipe.

Cool Cubes:


Chicken or beef stock (liquid)


  1. Put stock in an ice cube tray and freeze.
  2. Once frozen, feed to dog.

It is so easy, I can’t believe I never thought of this before.  Butler makes her own chicken and beef stock and the other day she pulled a batch out of the freezer to cook with.  As I was supervising her cooking, I began to notice the defrosting batch of stock and the idea hit me.  I convinced her to make me a batch of Cool Cubes, and it proved to be just as amazing as I had envisioned.

It is best if you can make your own chicken or beef stock for this, as many commercial brands are very high in sodium, which isn’t great for dogs (or people!).  To make a very basic stock, throw your left over chicken or beef bones in a crockpot or large saucepan, fill with water, and simmer for as long as possible (12-18 hours is great!) adding more water if needed.  If nothing else is added to the stock, it should be a fairly low-sodium stock base which is perfect for Cool Cubes.  If you don’t have the time to make your own stock, you can buy low-sodium liquid beef and chicken stock in most major grocery stores.  I would stay away from the powdered stocks that need to be mixed with water, as they are generally much higher in sodium.

This recipe can also be tweaked and made with other ingredients.  Frozen cubes of pureed watermelon are also very popular and delicious!
