A little girl!
It hasn’t even been two weeks since Rupert passed, but it feels like an eternity. I am now remembering the times before we found Rupert when we were a one dog household, and it is very strange to now go back to that. There are no decapitated stuffed animals lying around the living room, there is no frantic scampering through the house, and no one chases the vacuum anymore when I’m doing chores. It’s too quiet.
Oswald doesn’t seem too bent out of shape about Rupert’s absence, although he certainly knows something is up and seems to look for him quite often. He has been particularly clinging and demanding over the part week and a half, and Colin thinks it’s because he secretly does miss Rupert. I told Oswald that if that was the case, I would get him a new puppy that was just as obnoxious and annoying as Rupert was.
So, after much discussion, Oswald and I found ourselves browsing through the American Black and Tan Coonhound rescue site, just to see what was out there. Of course, I immediately wanted the first 30 dogs I came across so I had to narrow it down a bit, which was very hard. I would try to get Oswald to give me some feedback on different dogs as I pulled up their pictures, but he mostly just scowled and huffed occasionally to show is dissatisfaction. But then I saw this sweet face and, although I’ve always been a fan of boy dogs, I couldn’t say no to this sweet girl.
Her mom was a stray Bluetick Coonhound and we aren’t sure about dad. To me, she looks like a mix between Oswald (Catahoula coloring) and Rugby, the Redtick Coonhound I had growing up. Her foster family say she is very outgoing and personable, and is a fast learner. Although I haven’t met her yet, I have a sneaky suspicion that she may be ruling the house before long and putting Oswald in his place. I think having a little girl to run after might be good for him.
She is being spayed today, and so we will be bringing her home either this weekend or next week. Although she will never be a replacement for my sweet Rupert, I am thankful that we can offer her a loving home and a new life. Maybe Oswald will even bake her some Welcome Home dog biscuits!
Stay tuned for updates, lots of new pictures, and the name reveal!
